Rusinga Island

Rusinga Island is the dream land of ancient history. It is a place with amazing skies and birds which offer you more of the aquatic culture of Lake Victoria. Ruinga is a Bantu word derived from the word Lusinga meaning island. It is an elongation of approximately 16Km from end to end and 5Km at it's widest points. It lies on the Eastern part of Lake Victoria at the mouth of the Winam Gulf.

The Land has the most spectacular birds outlook and it is refered to as the weaver bird country due to the availability of 30 different species of weaverbirds. This species include queles, bishops and widow birds and many more.

This is where the last common ancestor of the great apes, Proconsul Heleloni, was discovered and it is believed to have existed around 27 million years ago. The Island also hosts the Musoleum of the Late Tom Mboya who is one of the most prominent African personalities in Kenya's history. His industrious political career led to his assasination on the 5th of July 1969
