Ruma National Park

Ruma National Park dubbed the "Last Retreat of the Roan Antelope", is the only terrestrial park in Nyanza Province. The park protects the only indigenous population of rare roan antelopes within Kenya and beyond

The Lambwe valley’s tsetse-fly-ridden bush, protected as Ruma National Park, is one of the few places in Kenya where you can see Jackson’s hartebeest and two extremes of the antelope family: the miniature oribi and the enormous, horse-like roan , which is found only here. Roans are extremely rare, and the best place to see them is among the park’s western grasslands, which are often hit by community fires that spread into the park from the west – they like the fresh grazing on burnt ground. Ruma also has about seventy beautiful Rothschild giraffe which aren’t too hard to see above the tall grass. You’ll have more difficulty spotting the leopards, the park’s only large predator, and you’ll be very lucky to spot is one of Ruma’s twenty prize denizens, the black rhinos.

Lake Simbi

Lake simbi is refered to by the locals as Simbi Nyaima meaning the village that sank. Simbi Nyaima is actually a crater lake a few kilometers from the shores of Lake Victoria. The Luo attach great importance to the site because of the legendary story. It is said that the people of Simbi were celebrating their success at the chief's home when an old woman appeared at the scene looking for shelter and food. But the chief threatened to beat her up if she stayed. She was forced to leave and one lady sympathized with her and gave her food and a warm bath. She advised the kind lady to leave the village with all her children and husband.

No sooner had they left than a heavy storm swept the whole village and it sank. The locals believe it happened in the olden days. One more reason you should visit is due to the existence of the flamingoes, it is believed that they were the domestic fowls that the Lady of the Lake (Nyanam) turned into wild birds as the Simbi village was being sunk as punishment for her slighting.
